3- Fruit of the month: Cherimoya
- The delicious fruit from the Incas.
Cherimoya is the tastiest fruit
of the various Anon varieties and
is originally from the part
of the Andes (the mountain area) between
Colombia to Bolivia, at an
altitude of 1000 to 2000m.
Nowadays the fruit is cultivated
world-wide in tropical
mountains and in sub-tropical
or mediterranean areas. In Florida
it is too hot to grow cherimoya,
so around those parts its sister,
the atemoya is cultivated.
The cherimoya is called "the
tree of icecream" and the fruits taste
like a blend of pineapple,
mango and strawberry flavors.
Cherimoyas are ripe within
two to three days at room temperature.
You should eat ripe fruits
immediately.
Ripe fruits are black-green
and give to slight pressure, like an
avocado or peach. Cherimoyas
are very vulnarable and are exported
on a small scale. The cherimoya
season is from
October to May in California.
We're busy with a new Cherimoya
page featuring more information.
We'll let you know when we
have finished it.

4- Important new information
about fruit.
We have found the following
two interesting articles
that you definitely must take
a look at:
* Times Magazine "Foods That
Fight Cancer"
Be sure to include red, orange
and yellow fruits in your daily diet.
This because of the lycopene
these colored fruits contain.
Lycopene is an antioxidant
that ripens fruits and gives them their
yellow to red color. The redder
a fruit, the healthier a fruit.
The article of Times Magazine
of april 1999 describes tomatoes
as a fruit rich in source
of anticancer agents but also red watermelon,
red grapefruit, pink grapefruit,
guava, oranges and other frutis
with yellow to red colored
flesh contain substantial amounts
of lycopene and other anticancer
agents.
We found this information in an article from Times Magazine. The information used to be available free at the following link, but last time we checked it out we had to pay to if we wanted to read the information.
* Pysicians for Responsible
Medicin (PCRM)
"Calcium in Plant-Based
Diets"
Oranges are good for the bones,
cow milk is not good for the bones.
Diets that are high in protein
cause more calcium to be lost through
the urine. Protein from animal
products is much more likely to
cause calcium loss than protein
from plant foods. This may be one
reason that vegetarians tend
to have stronger bones than meat eaters.
Also: Orange juice is a better
source for calcium than milk.

5 - Question of the month
- Effect of grapefruit on medication.
Question - "How does grapefruit
affect a person who is taking
high blood-pressure medication?
Grapefruit has lots of health
benefits. How can I
still benefit from eating and drinking grapefruit
products or what can I use
that will have the same benefits?"
Answer - "Consuming excessive
amounts of grapefruit can have
a negative effect on high
blood pressure medication and on other
medicines in general. Grapefruit
contains a certain substance
that is responsible for this.
Instead of having a lot of grapefruits
don't have more than a few
a week and have oranges or other citrus
fruit to replace the grapefruit."
