| | | | | | | | | | | | An Apple a Day... Keeps the Fruit Pages Happy | | | Jeroen Goedhart s The Fruit Pages have brought in the new year with many viewers losing weight with fruit and using fruit diets. Stressing that people eat five to nine pieces of fruit a day, Jeroen has built a specialty content site with a legion of followers: fruitarians and health-conscious websurfers.
Jeroen especially likes people to eat fruit -- like guava -- while they complete his demographic surveys (1/2001):
BURST!: How did your site get off the ground?
Jeroen: I was interested in fruit and tried to find information about it. It appeared that the information was scattered and often hard to find. Libraries and books did not supply all the info I was looking for. On the Web, the information I could find was offered by the big fruit producers and was limited.
I decided to combine scientific and specific fruit-related information and publish it on the Web so everyone could find important information that appears to be unknown, for the most part. Four friends decided to help.
What has been the role of advertising on your site?
Because of our sponsors we were able to pay for expenses. In this way we could continue maintaining the site. We're glad we found a reliable partner that takes all the work out of our hands.
Fruit gives a lot of clean energy, contains about as much water as our bodies and the best way to lose weight in a healthy and happy way is to eat as much fruit as you can. | Do you think about demographics or targeting your audience?
Yes. First we targeted our site to Americans. About 70% of our visitors is a US resident. Right now we target young American women who want to lose weight or live more healthily with fruit. We found out our newly introduced "Fruit and weight loss" page appeared to be a big success. We also target children and teachers with our fruit alphabet and other pages and also people looking for scientific information.

What have you learned since starting your web site?
That there is a lot of basic information on nutrition that the largest part of the population still ignores or isn't aware of. We try to be an eye-opener. We try to improve by answering questions of the public, looking at the search terms people enter in our "search the site" box, looking at the BURST! survey results, by measuring the popularity of certain subjects we gather, and by combining the most relevant information the public wants to find. In this way we are capable to publish the information on a better level of quality.
What are the best fruits to enjoy this time of year? Apples?
Apples are in season and if you buy them we suggest to select organically grown. They have fuller taste, don't contain polluting elements and are more nutrient. Buying organically produced food also supports the environment in general.
Another fruit that is available this season is the cherimoya. It contains lots of vitamin C and tastes very good. A nice try to explore the world of fruits.
I've heard Leonardo DaVinci was a fruitarian and only ate fruit. Could a person live solely on fruit?
Leonardo DaVinci was considered the strongest man in Florence and he only ate fruit, pasta, and grains. He died at 67, which was very old for that time. What do you think about that?
I think it s impressive that he was able to sustain tremendous energy from that. What is most important for people to know about fruit?
That one has to eat at least five to nine pieces of fresh fruits a day (or squeeze them). This isn't so hard as many people think: if you squeeze three oranges and one grapefruit, eat a banana and a kiwi afterwards, and some grapes before lunch you already have had seven pieces!
It is very important to eat five fresh (not cooked) fruits in order to receive the proper amount of fibers for your intestines, calcium for your bones, vitamins for your immune system and minerals for your organs in order to get happily old. Fruit gives a lot of clean energy, contains about as much water as our bodies and the best way to lose weight in a healthy and happy way is to eat as much fruit as you can. Fruit is fresh, fruit is tasty, fruit is good for the skin, and once you really have started eating a lot of it on a regular basis you might find out what good old Leonardo already knew back in 1490!
